Every pairing starts from an element score — 40 points for a shared element, 30 for the supportive fire–air and earth–water pairings, 18 when the elements are neutral to each other, and 8 for the clashing fire–water and earth–air combinations — then gets adjusted by modality and polarity, and is finally normalised to 0–100.
Modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable) decides pace. Two fixed signs agree on direction but not on who moves first; a cardinal and a mutable sign rarely argue about timing at all. Polarity decides who initiates: same polarity means both people reach for the wheel at once; opposite polarity means one leads and one responds without either feeling demoted.
